Top 10 Essential Travel Tips for Women

Traveling as a woman can be a rewarding and enriching experience. Remember to relax, have fun, and go with the flow.  Whether you’re embarking on a solo adventure or exploring with friends, these top 10 travel tips will help you make the most of your journey:

1.      Plan Ahead: I highly recommend researching your destination thoroughly to understand its culture, customs, and safety considerations. Make a detailed itinerary and share it with friends or family. Make copies of your passport, travel insurance, and any other important documents required for your journey. Safeguard these duplicate items in a secure location in the event of loss or damage to the originals. I always make multiple copies and keep them in different places just to be extra safe. Alternatively, consider taking pictures or downloading these items onto your phone, this is a good option but remember if you lose your phone, you lose the copies. You should also register your trip with the Canadian Embassy (or your local embassy). This complimentary service enables you to receive any important information during a natural or civil disaster and can be completed in about 10 minutes. It also helps to inform them of your trip in case anything may happen. Always better to be safe than sorry.

2.      Pack Light: Pack versatile, wrinkle-resistant clothing that can be mixed and matched. Consider packing a scarf or shawl for modesty and to cover your shoulders in conservative areas. Consider a nylon bag as a purse as it can double as a chic beach and sightseeing bag. This is one of my go-to stylish but functional waterproof shoulder bag. Packing make-up can be challenging, so opt for cream-based products when possible. A Blush, lipstick, and mascara are typically sufficient for most occasions. I have learned the hard way, I used to carry tons of makeup and never used it. It’s usually too hot and melts off anyway so only bring the essentials. Compression packing cubes can be incredibly useful, I always travel with this set here. A scented dryer sheet tucked inside the suitcase keeps everything smelling fresh throughout your journey.

3.      Stay connected: Keep your phone charged and carry a portable charger for emergency charges. These Portable Power Bank come in a two-pack and are compact and compatible with all phones and USB devices. Consider getting a local SIM card, E-SIM (I always use Airalo and love them. Use my referral code to get $3 free towards your next esim here), or an international data plan to stay connected with loved ones and access maps and translation apps. Depending on how long you stay I suggest staying away from an international phone plan as it’s usually a lot more expensive than an esim or local Sim card.

4.      Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Be vigilant and aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded or unfamiliar areas. Trust your instincts, avoid risky situations, and limit your alcohol consumption. If you do end up lost or end up drinking too much (which happens do not feel bad I have done it) do not make it obvious and do not panic. Find an available ride share or cab that you can trust.

5.      Stay Safe at Night: Avoid walking alone at night, especially in poorly lit or unfamiliar areas. Use reputable transportation options and let someone know your plans. Share your location via a tracking app with friends or family for additional protection. I always bring extra protection like a whistle or a personal alarm system just as an added precaution.

6.      Respect Local Customs: Research and respect the local customs, traditions, and dress codes of the places you visit. Dress modestly and be mindful of your behavior to avoid offending locals. So many places have been closed to the public or put in strict rules due to people disrespecting the rules. Let’s remember that different cultures have different rules and beliefs. Be polite.

7.      Stay Healthy: Traveling can be a whirlwind so remember to stay hydrated, eat well, and get enough rest. I recommend packing electrolytes to help stay hydrated.  Carry necessary medications and consider travel insurance to cover unexpected medical expenses. I also carry a reusable water bottle that collapses to make it easy to fill and store. You can find my favorite one here.

8.      Secure Your Belongings: Keep your belongings secure at all times. Use a money belt, neck pouch, or cross body bag to carry valuables, and lock your bags when traveling. I also use this travel wallet that is great for carrying cards, money, passports, and more. It has a wristband that keeps it always attached to you as well as RFID to protect your cards. If you are staying alone in a hotel I recommend grabbing an extra door lock like this one. It offers peace of mind while you sleep.

9.      Stay Flexible: Travel can be unpredictable, so remember to stay flexible with your plans and be open to new experiences. Embrace the unexpected and go with the flow. You don’t want to be stressed out and upset during your trip so let go of the strict itinerary and go with the flow. Too many times I have gone off my plan and met the most amazing friends along the way who I still talk to today.

10. Trust Your Instincts: If something feels wrong or unsafe, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. It’s better to stay safe than be polite. In the words of one of my favorite podcasts “Stay sexy and don’t get murdered.”
